a time for change

Some things are worth preserving. Others need to move with the times. Knowing the difference is important.

We first designed the website for Sheffield Silverware in 2009. For seventeen years, it did exactly what it was intended to do: provide an online presence for a traditional business specialising in the repair, restoration and replating of silverware. And, for a long time, it did that very well. But technology doesn’t stand still.

By 2026, the website was beginning to show its age. Built on technology that was becoming increasingly outdated, it wasn’t designed for today’s mobile devices, and maintaining it was becoming more difficult. The support available from the hosting company was increasingly limited, too. Our client was understandably reluctant to change something that had worked for so many years. And we understood that. After all, a new website represents an investment, and it’s important that the reasons for making that investment are clear.

So we talked. Not about changing things for the sake of change, but about protecting what was already there.

We also considered the longer term. As our client began thinking about the future of his business, we discussed how a modern, well-maintained website could become an asset in its own right, particularly if he ever decided to pass the business on to someone else. Gradually, the case for change became clear. The challenge was to create something new without losing what made Sheffield Silverware distinctive.

This is a business rooted in Sheffield’s remarkable history of silver craftsmanship. Its work is traditional, skilled and meticulous. The website needed to reflect those qualities, rather than overwhelm them with unnecessary design. The result is a clean, contemporary website that allows the craftsmanship, services and history of the business to speak for themselves.

Behind the scenes, however, the changes are considerable. The outdated technology has been replaced with a modern, more secure and maintainable foundation, designed to work across today’s devices and to support the business into the future. There is something rather satisfying about that. A business dedicated to restoring beautiful things has a website that has itself been thoughtfully renewed.

Not because everything old needs replacing. But because sometimes, preserving something valuable means knowing when it’s time to change.

Seventeen years on, we’re delighted to have been part of both chapters.
